This week we discussed access to water as a basic human right and looked at the lengths some children have to go just to get a limited amount. We also began our digital literacy work focusing on "lie detection" and website validity through the Google Digital Literacy Tour. We reviewed three websites offering information on the existence of extraterrestrial life with an eye on Authority (Is it clear who wrote it and are they an expert?), Accuracy (How is the information presented - grammar, and photos?), Objectivity (Is all the information presented in a balanced way and do advertisements match the content on the page?), Currency (Are there dates showing when content was created and updated?) and Coverage (Is the subject covered in depth?). This was an introduction and we will continue with more next week.
I have been in contact with a teacher in Ghana and Finland regarding email and snail mail exchanges with the students. I am hoping to begin these in the coming weeks. The students have begun thinking about the aspects of school that they are most eager to share. We will be working on photos and descriptions of these this week.
The students worked on their "6 word memoirs" which will be submitted to this website (http://www.smithmag.net/ sixwords/) as well as shared with our new global penpals.
Goodreads is a website where people can track the books they read and offer ratings and reviews. While the site is restricted to people 13 years and above, younger students have used it through their parents or teachers. I have set up a classroom account and will be asking the students to review and track the books they read as a class. I will be the one to submit their reviews and their names will not be disclosed. They will be able to see their reviews only with access provided by me or a parent.
